Redefining Success

The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these qualities have little to do with success as we have defined it.

― David Orr, Ecological Literacy

On Wednesday morning November 7th, I saw this quote in my facebook feed (via ChildrenInspireDesign).  David Orr is a distinguished professor of environmental studies and noted ecologist.  I couldn’t help but make the connection between his words and those of Dr. Montessori who said “Establishing lasting peace is the work of education”.   I am continually inspired by the Montessori method and its greater purpose of educating a world of children who are both intelligent and humane.
